Opened in 1927, Nashville's War Memorial Building is part of the State Capitol Complex. Inscribed on the courtyard wall are the names of 3,400 Tennesseans who lost their lives in World War I. The inscription on the building's pediment is from President Woodrow Wilson's April 2, 1917 "War Message" to Congress: "America is privileged to spend her blood and her might for the principles that gave her birth and happiness and the peace which she has treasured."
