Birmingham's Sloss Furnaces operated as a pig iron-producing blast furnace from 1882 to 1971. In 1981 it was designated a National Historic Landmark, and now houses an interpretive museum. The site can be rented to host private functions. On the day I was at Sloss Furnaces, a regional photographers' organization had arranged to hold a "fashion shoot."
