For several months in early 1861, Montgomery was the capital of the newly-formed Confederate States of America. The house in which Jefferson Davis and his family lived is now preserved as "the Confederate White House" and is located across the street from Alabama's State Capitol. Some Montgomerians are still proud to call their city "the cradle of the Confederacy."
